Feshane A Legacy of Ottoman Industrial Innovation
Feshane, situated on the shores of the Golden Horn, was commissioned by Sultan Mahmut II in 1826 to serve as a manufacturing center for military uniforms. Originally intended to produce uniforms for the newly formed army, the facility shifted its focus to the production of fezzes when the Ottoman Army opted to purchase uniforms from Austria instead. As a result, it became known as Feshane-i Amire.
Evolution into a Cultural Hub
In 1992, with support from the Municipality of Istanbul, Feshane underwent a transformation into the Museum of Contemporary Craftsmanship. However, rising water levels in the Golden Horn rendered the building unusable for several years.
