The Importance of the Treaty

It’s not important to argue about who started the second war. The most important thing to remember is that Serbia had already broken the treaty, both in spirit and in action. This happened while Bulgaria, Serbia’s ally, was still fighting in Thrace for their common cause. Serbia broke the treaty with the knowledge, approval, and support of the Russian Minister in Belgrade Misunderstanding About Serbia’s Claims.

What the Treaty Actually Says

Some people claim that the treaty assumed each side would keep the territory it conquered. I have heard this from some reliable sources. However, as someone who has studied law and agreements, I can confidently say that this claim is incorrect.

I have read the treaty carefully, both in its original Bulgarian form and in an English translation, and I found no such assumption in the document. The treaty is very clear and definite. It clearly shows Bulgaria’s rights, and it also clearly shows Serbia’s rights Istanbul Cultural Tours.

Disputed Territory and the Role of Arbitration

The only part of the treaty where there is uncertainty is the area between Shar-Planina and the line shown on the map attached to the treaty. This area is called the disputed zone. Both Serbia and Bulgaria have claims to this land, and the treaty states that these claims will be decided by the Tsar of Russia, acting as an arbitrator. Both parties agreed to accept his decision.

Serbia’s Claim to Macedonia

Serbia’s claim to Macedonia is based on land that was part of a Serbian ruler’s empire many centuries ago. This is not a reasonable claim. It would be just as unreasonable for Great Britain to demand the return of Calais from France after this war ends.

This claim is even more absurd than the Greek demand to take back Constantinople, or the idea of reviving the so-called Greek Empire.
